30/30 Update
Hi all,

Hope you all got Paul's personal account of his epic 30 hour bike rides last Friday. Thanks to any who came out to keep Paul company. What a fantastic achievement except it is a shame that the media have shown such a lack of interest. These days it seems easier to get in the press for minor misdemeanours but impossible when someone pushes their absolute limits and raises considerable funds for a worthy cause. Sometimes I think perhaps the press is blitzed with charity fundraisers but Paul's exceptional achievement didn't merit exemption.

Fundraising so far is £14,396.60 although only 18 of you have declared their figures. If any of you have yet to declare if you can even provide an estimate it would be appreciated. Those of you who declared their figures last week and who may have updates then please let me know. Let's keep the inertia going.

I think there will be another breakfast this Saturday at Victor Hugo's. Those that want a ride before then meet here at Ian Brown's at 7.30am. I am hoping to be relieved of daughter to orchestra duties so hope to be there too.

It will then be into week four and the run in. Hope many of you as possible will meet for the last day ride at the Rocque to Rock. We will start at approx. 11.00am so that we return to the finish at White Rock just as the hog is roasted. Hopefully we will have a fat cheque to hand to the Friends of Les Bourgs.

Good Luck to Paul. Karina, Tony and Phil on their 3 x 100mile rides starting Friday 3rd July. Listen out for live interviews this coming Friday on Island FM.

We will have a de brief and well earned beverage on the Friday after 30 in 30. Venue to be announced but timed for 6.30pm so those that need can get on with their weekend. Hope as many of you can make it as possible, bring along long suffering partners and/or children.

Keep going, nearly there.
Yours

Ian

30hr Bike Ride
well glad its all over don't think i will be doing that again well not at the moment.  thanks to everyone for there support and thanks to the riders that kept me company.  Tony Lane got it all going when we left Ian Browns at 9am a good 3 hrs later and it was time to say bye to Tony and hello to Dave Patten bringing 2 litres of cold water was more then welcome.  2pm came and Dave went then joined by Olli Tracy from the velo club what a star bringing with him chocolate, bananas, and energy bars after a nice ride through King Mills we had a quick stop for more chocolate, coke and ice cream and a really disgusting tuna roll.  than it was just me from 5pm till midnight giving me a chance just to roll along and a chance for fish and chips sorry 10 min stop also taking advice from a few people i did stop for a few mins every hour to stretch. With my knees killing me midnight welcomed Jon Richards off we went around the coast really needed more light "any states members here" with the darkness effecting us we stayed along the between bidge and town.  2am came and went and jon stayed right till 5am so glad he did really struggled at 3am with staying awake. With sunrise only an hour away it was something to look forward to.  Riding up and down piers and along the front a cup of coffee would have done us both good. so 5am came and after riding for 5 hours and 65 miles it was time for jon to go but not before being joined by Tim hilly Loveridge.  Gentle riding was on the cards and so was a hill only a small one at chouet then around the coast and into town where tim left think it was 7 or 7.30. Then i was all alone feeling very sleepy and in agony with my knees i ploughed in several mars bars, energy bars, and coffee before going on nearly didn't.  bumping into Ian at Cobo and Bleasdale just around the corner it was around the coast another time with a few inland roads going very slow "well rolling" then midday arrived still with 3 hours to go hoping my knees were going to make it.  I arrived it town with everything going on it finally woke me up at 1pm well that a cup of coffee with 4 teaspoons of coffee.  I then picked up speed along the front for about the next hour in and out the saddle "mostly out" to get more miles then came 2pm felt like crying with only one hour left and not far off the miles i wanted it was time to enjoy the sunshine and relax rolling around town with a mister whippy "a good friend". 2 more trips between bridge and town then that was it arriving to a warm welcome at Ian's in was nice getting off the bike knowing i didn't have to get back on.  with a total of 30 hours 350 miles and 10270 calories it was off to bed and yes i'm still there Thanks to you all.

30hr Bike Ride

Day 3 - 8th June 2009
Hi everyone.

Hope you managed to miss the showers yesterday. There is meant to be some rain later this morning and persist through to around 7.00 or 8.00 tonight. Good if you have already done your hour for today. I did promise sunshine was ordered but not all day everyday.

For those looking for variety of opportunities have a look at the events put on by the Guernsey Velo Club during June. http://www.guernseyvelo.org.gg/default.asp?pageMarker=calendar

Also for those that want a more leisurely way of passing an hour or so on a bike than try the Guernsey Bicycle Group's Tuesday Evening bike rides. Speeds at the pace of the slowest rider on the night. Bring the family.

Tue 9/6  Meet at Footes Lane - Tour Guide Wendy Goddard Tue 16/6 Meet at Tostevin's Veg Stall - Tour Guide Peter Morgan Tue 23/6 Meet at St Sampson's High School - Tour Guide Diane Harding Tue 30/6 Meet at Les Vauxbelets - Tour Guide Rosie Dorey.

Finally, don't forget National Bike Week starts Saturday 13th and the key date id Friday 20th which is National "Bike2Work" Day. Get you work colleagues to join you on your ride. Better still charge a fee to those colleagues who opt out and add that to your sponsorship.

Guernsey's own "Car Free Days" began on the last Friday in May and will be repeated each last Friday of the month. Therefore the date for June in Friday 26th and you could encourage your colleagues to join you in that too.

I have had a lot of support for another social ASAP. I will set something up and let you know.

Cheers
Ian

Hi all,
Thanks to all those that came to Victor Hugos. Sorry to those that were otherwise engaged. There was well over twenty of you looking fantastic in your blue (and white) jerseys. Hope you now know a few more of your fellow participants.

It is great to get together and I will forward a few options for informal meets during the 30 days. If your free then it will be good to see you. More details to follow next week.

Be in touch really soon.

Regards
Ian

Local lawyer attempts cycle climb for charity - 26/06/08
A LOCAL lawyer is taking on a triple cycle challenge this summer, participating in three charitable bicycle trials.

As well as the annual Ride and Dine event (previously known as the Rocque to Rock), and the new Ian Brown 30/30 Challenge, Ian Beattie, a partner at law firm Carey Olsen, has created a challenge of his own.

On Saturday 5 July, the lawyer will be attempting to cycle up the Val des Terres 30 times in just three hours to raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice.

‘As a keen cyclist, I didn’t hesitate to signing up to take part in Ian Brown’s 30/30 challenge, but was keen to push myself further,’ said Mr Beattie.

‘The Val de Terres is renowned as one of the steepest hills in Guernsey – and to tie in with the ‘30’ theme, I decided to really test myself and attempt 30 climbs in three hours, and what better reason than to raise money for such a good cause.’

The climb is half a mile long, with a gradient equivalent to a 1:8. So in total Mr Beattie will be climbing for 15 miles at a gradient steeper than often seen in gruelling events such as the Tour de France.

This challenge will coincide with the 30/30 and take place the day before the island-wide Ride and Dine event from Saumarez Park.

Organiser of the 30/30 challenge, Ian Brown of Ian Brown Cycle shop said: ‘Numbers participating in the Rocque to Rock bike ride have levelled out over the years, despite an increased popularity in cycling. We came up with the 30/30 idea to give those who cycle regularly a new challenge. Ian has taken this concept to another level and it will be a fantastic achievement to manage the cycle the full 30 times up the Val des Terres in such a short time span.’

Mr Beattie’s Val des Terres challenge will commence on Saturday, 5 July at 2.00pm. Support from any members of the public wishing to witness the climb is welcome.

Anyone wishing to sponsor him should contact either Ian Beattie at Carey Olsen or Ian Brown at Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop.

Fundraising update: To date Mr Beattie has raised £2,514 - £1,144 for the 30/30 and £1,370 for the Val des Terres Challenge.

This means that guaranteed funds raised so far for Les Bourgs by all the people participating in the 30/30 are an incredible £25,489.50.

Free, Guided Evening Rides - 05/06/08
It must be nearly summer because the Guernsey Bicycle Group is launching its 10th annual "Free, Guided Evening Rides".

These are circular tours, starting and finishing at the same place. They will all be on Tuesday evenings setting off at 7.00 pm and led by committee members of the GBG. The first ride will be on Tuesday May 13th.

The rides were originally based on the Tourist Board book of cycle tours but have evolved into 'mystery tours' devised by the leader of the day. What has not changed is that the rides will all be on the quieter, more picturesque lanes which abound on this beautiful isle. They are not tests of endurance but will be at a gentle pace, never faster than the slowest rider there!

All that the GBG would ask is that bicycles are in safe working condition, participants wear cycle helmets and that all children be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Ian's Challenge - 27/05/08
Ian Beattie is setting himself an amazing challenge, He wants to ride up the Val des Terres 30 times in 3 hours. Time and date yet to be finalised. Good luck with that!
