 Les Noirgiots - Mountain Bike Race - 28 Feb 2010
The first race of the 2010 Guernsey Velo Club season and the first mountain bike race in the Ian Brown and Arrowsmith Marlowe series took place at a very muddy Les Noirgiots this weekend.
Torrential rain overnight resulted in the course turning into a bog and due to a relatively small field the organizers decided to run all of the categories at once. The usual frantic start ensued with everyone fighting for position into the opening tight sections of the course. With the early sections of the first lap cleared elite rider Philip Touzeau overtook Gary Robert and Andy Colver and began opening up a commanding lead. The energy sapping conditions and sections of the course which were un-rideable which resulted in the riders testing out their running skills as well as their bike handling this suited Touzeau and he had soon opened up an unassailable lead over the competition and came home to take the win five minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Jon Osborn who started slowly soon made contact with Andy Colver and Gary Robert and the trio battle together over the course of the race with second place changing hands on a number of occasions. On the final lap Jon Osborn hit the front with Andy Colver on his wheel; however, a slight mistake from Colver on the run in to the finish allowed Osborn to open up a slight gap to take second place ahead of Colver. Gary Robert came in fourth just behind with Leon Ogier taking fifth and Ben Walden sixth in the elite category.
The advanced class was taken by Pete Miller who rode most of the early stages of the race with the elite riders and eventually finished comfortably ahead of second place LCF Development squad rider Alex Wilson. Mark Smith took third place with LCF Rider Alex Falla in fourth. Paul O’Reilly was the sole novice rider and he rode well despite the difficult conditions to take first place in the category.
The poor conditions seemed to have deterred many of the veteran riders from competing so the usually strong field was reduced to just four riders. It was Steve Smith who controlled the race establishing an early lead ahead of Mark Batiste with Andy Wilson and Paul Setters battling with each other for third place. As the end of the race closed in Steve Smith still maintained a narrow lead over Mark Batiste and he held on for the win with Andy Wilson Holding off Paul Setters to take third place.
Michael Mann continued his fine form from last season despite the move up to the Under 16’s class taking first place ahead of Will Falla and Sam Collenette. Newcomer Tom Palmer produced a fine ride in the Under 14’s class to take first place ahead of Jack English and in the Under 12’s it was Bradley Smith who took first place ahead of Sam Reed.
